Bro let me tell u this. I still enjoy football to the utmost fullest and like tactical battles as long as they are progressive and not negative as what we saw in the 2010s. I actually love the concept of "Total Football" reintegrated by Pep. But 90s and 2000s football was a very big spectacle to behold. Football was not this stats obsession based as u see today. It was all about how well players contribute to the team by the something called the EYE TEST, which solely means people have to watch all the games to determine who was the best player on the pitch. It was the only era where you could see Cannavaro win the Balon Dor be cause people saw how key he was in helping Italy win the World Cup in 2006. Players like Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Zidane, Robinho, Kaka, Adriano, Henry, RVN etc in their Prime was a breathe taking sight to behold because of how they not only captivated football abilities but of how they knew how to stand out from the rest and were all special players. Thats the reason why these player never had monster stats because they never played the game for stats, they dominated games by opening up oppositions and adding that much need flair to take games by the scruff of the neck. Football now is being ruined by rating apps because they scrutinizes the games down to every useless metrics and often fails the eye test.

This kid just summed up how i feel about what used to be the "beautiful game" we were so lucky to grow up with probably the most talented Football era ever, massive amounts of talent not just on the elite clubs but on small clubs aswell, many unsung heroes of our childhood who were ballers back then, the Miccolis, the Valerons, the Riquelmes, magicians who express themselves and were artists on the pitch, all that replaced by mechanic soulless back and forward, today's game feels a lot like that Simpsons parody of the world cup🤦🏻‍♂️

I'm happy to witness 2000's football first hand. Because I was 10 in the year 2000 and 19 in 2009. And I knew almost all players during that area. My favorite player as a child was the Brazilian Ronaldo. And as a teen my favorite player by far was Ronaldinho. And for me it's the other way around I don't know much players from the 2010's and the 2020's but ask me about the players from the 2000's and I can say oh that was such a magnificent player. Or in the case of CR7 I only can say he's a ugly faild Ken doll that got dumped by Barbie and sucks at football.

Also i want to leave something said for younger fans who feel patronized , just because we call it the "golden age" that doesn't mean its perfect, and just because we mean it was the best age in the history of football that doesn't mean that the current age is awful, the professionalism and athleticism of modern football is nothing short of applaudable, better than ever before in fact, it's not a knock on modern football to say that 20 years ago the average and best ball control in professional football was better and funnier to watch, it's about trade-offs, perhaps the kids born after 2005 wouldn't even like the football that Dinho, JJ Okocha, El Niño Torrez and Kaka played, just like most of us older fans very much dont like the football Haaland played in 2023. Maybe we're in the silver age of football and in some ways, the silver age was better at some things than the actual golden age.

Football just changed its genetic pre-disposition by nature of the game becoming more systematized. Top Football genetics used to be foot-eye coordination, axis-balance control and spatial awareness which resulted on the best players in the world having out of this planet ball-control. These days football has become more physical and athletic because inevitably, those traits are a lot more *realiable* than what you'd need for exceptional ball control, a player who can be fast and durable, whom doesn't get injuried often, whom doesn't drop off a cliff in the last 15 minutes of the game due to tiresome, whom can 99.9% of the time complete a pass even if its a pedestrian pass, is just a lot easier to build a system around in a way that someone like Ronaldinho or Zidane isn't , even if Ronaldinho and Zidane are trillions of times more skilled with the ball on their feet than someone like Haaland or Bellingham, they are considerably slower, and by the 2nd half of the season you will see them having more noticeable dropoffs in performance in the last 10 minutes of the match, moreover people like Ronaldinho specially always lacked discipline and you never know if one day they're gonna miss practice and just come to the match with hangover headache (which happened multiple times) and then, because they are so gifted, they actually dropped off a cliff to the point when in those drunken matches they are just as good as bellingham or haaland, but totally lack the physicality of them. It's sad, i personally much prefer that older style of football because i much more enjoy the spectacle, but i am aware that as far as pure results on a spreadsheet go...the modern aproach is objectively "more correct" , it's a tragedy, Ronaldinho is my goat and from what im watching these days, it's not looking too good, kids growing up today watching football wont have a Ronaldinho to look at and that's so fucked up in too many levels.

The statement about the defenders being better defenders is somewhat true because the game has gone more offensive. Not necessarily a bad thing just means players who probably started off as midfielders and attackers are going towards the back and leaving the elite up top and phasing out players who can’t pass or are comfortable on the ball

im 25 and i feel lucky to lived football, breathed video games, and ate movies of the 2000s. Now I am busy with work and the quality of the stuff is bad too so no reason to enjoy.

2000's football was absolute magic I felt like a kid in candy store during that time. I fell in love with so many players. Now all I get is sports politics and a little bit of football.

I think Man Utd success in 2000s and 1990s was a result of their Aura too which set by SAF.

It felt special when you were able to watch the great players play when I was a kid in the late 90s. It was either during a World Cup, or a Champions League final, or when one of the S-tier clubs from Italy or Spain would face off against one of your domestic clubs (I'm from Germany, but Germany was never known for flashy signings back then). Today, I feel like I could pay somebody 9,99 a month and I'd be able to watch any player I wanted, maybe even during breakfast or when they're out shopping for clothes. 🤷‍♂ Also, teams and players have become so interchangeable. You would be able to pick Beckham or Roberto Carlos or Totti out of the crowd based on how they moved. And if somebody was wearing white or - God forbid - *red* shoes, you know they'd be trouble.

I don't quite agree with the "there's no freedom for players" thing. Look for instance at Inzaghi's Inter this season where they dominated the league with a style of play so fluid that it has been compared with dutch total football of the 70's. They are able to create so much space that the left centre back can go deep, cross and the right centre back can receive it and score with a header during an active play (it really happened! In fact it was a joke from Inzaghi himself, he said that it was the only combination that Inter didn't make yet and they succeded) but also they made beautiful goals from outside the box with Calhanoglu, Dimarco and Lautaro. Just watch the Top 10 Inter goals of the seasons video and you'll see what i'm talking about.
